‘I literally saw the whole thing pop up behind him,’ Julian said at a press conference held at Sydney Airport when the two surfers arrived back in Australia. ‘It was a lot bigger than him and I honestly froze … I was freaking out. I saw him start to get manhandled by the shark and saw him get knocked off his board. A wave popped up between us and I started paddling for him, fearing for his life … [He] was away from his board, the shark had bitten through his leg rope, and the board was fifteen to twenty metres away from him. I went into panic mode. He was a sitting duck now … I felt like I couldn’t get to him in time.’
